The Manette Neighborhood Coalition (MNC) is challenging friends and neighbors across the city of Bremerton to match the MNC donations to the Fresh Bucks program of the Bremerton Farmers Market (BFM). For 2014 Fresh Bucks will match the first $10 of SNAP/Food Stamps customers spending on produce and meat at each market. During Farmers Market season, this could add up to an extra $80 a month per family for fresh fruits, vegetables and meat. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for the 2014 market year. In Manette, we have already raised $1000 of that. Will your neighborhood or service organization accept the challenge?
Unlike the supermarket, every dollar spent at the Bremerton Farmers Market grows the economy in Bremerton, Kitsap County and Washington State. Every dollar donated to Fresh Bucks helps out local families at least twice—once to the SNAP users family and once to the farmers’ families. In Seattle, $55,000 invested in supplementing SNAP users fresh produce purchases resulted in more than $125,000 in spending in the local economy.
In order to have enough to eat every month, almost 25% of Bremerton households use food assistance. 90% of SNAP recipients live in households with children, seniors or the disabled. Starting this month (November), households using SNAP had a big cut in money for food, due to the expiration of the 2009 Recovery Act. These dollars not only feed our friends and neighbors, but they also provide income to our local businesses.
Your donation will provide nutritious, local food to a hungry family, and help keep the farming economy in Kitsap alive. Just $10 helps buy $20 worth of fresh, local food for a needy family.
