The Bremerton Farmers Market has two market locations. Our long-standing market is located at Evergreen Park (off Park Ave) in downtown Bremerton, WA. It operates from 4-7 p.m. every Thursday, from May 2 to October 17, 2013.
In 2011, we started a new Sunday market in downtown Bremerton. This year, the Sunday market will run from 10:30 – 2:30pm, every Sunday, from May 5 to October 13, 2013 – down at the Bremerton Ferry Terminal.
The farmers market started as a small gathering of local farmers and crafters in the courtyard of the old Cafe Destino in 2004 that sold their goods to passersby on Wednesday evenings. The potential idea of a farmers market in Bremerton grew between the organizers at the time, the Bremerton Urban Garden Society and Cafe Destino. More and more vendors started to show interest in participating and in 2005, the growing group of vendors expanded into the parking lot of Seaside Community Church next door.
By 2006, it was decided that it was time to take it to the next level and become a REAL farmers market. Enlisting the help of a founding member of the very successful Poulsbo Farmers Market, the group became organized by applying for WA state and city of Bremerton business licenses and forming a board of directors. The market also joined and adopted the guidelines of the Washington State Farmers Market Association. A professional banner was made up, a logo developed, rules and fees established and vendors lined up to sell at our market. The Mayor of Bremerton pledged the city’s support of the market and offered to help us grow in the future.
Over the course of the next two years, the market’s membership reached record levels of more than 30 memberships, plus it participated in the Women/Infants/Children and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. Participating vendors can accept these coupons from WIC and Senior clients. Musicians signed on to perform weekly and regular customers became familiar faces weekly.
After two years in the church parking lot and slowly developing its popularity as one of the best weekday markets on the Kitsap Peninsula, the market decided that it needed to take the next step. It was time to seek the next long-term goal of moving into the city’s park, Evergreen Park, which was located across the street from the church. The market’s board spent 2008-09 winter working with the city of Bremerton to establish a lease and location. With generous support from the market’s vendors and the city, an agreement was set up by February 2009.
The Bremerton Farmers Market continues to set up in Evergreen Park, and in 2010 introduced EBT/SNAP redemption and debit/credit payment options in the market. To see what’s planned for the season, visit our “Events” page.
